  8. │ This record is a means of conveying information about a software   │
  9. │ product from the author to distributors and users.  It contains a  │
  10. │ normal, "human-readable" section (you're reading it now), followed │
  11. │ by a compressed data record.  The data record contains a great     │
  12. │ deal of information in a form useable by automated tools.  This    │
  13. │ allows BBSes, disk vendors, etc. to test automatically for         │
  14. │ permission to distribute, and to automatically extract product     │
  15. │ information for use in BBS files databases, vendor catalogs, etc.  │

  80. This package contains the 4EDIT(TM) file description editor
  81. (Version 2.0), by XD Systems.  This document contains only a brief
  82. description of the package and its features, along with instructions for
  83. its installation.

  85. If you've ever wished you could rapidly add file descriptions to many
  86. files at one sitting, then 4EDIT is the program for you. 4EDIT is a
  87. windowed editor for file descriptions.  It has many features that
  88. make it flexible and easy to use.  The program contains extensive online
  89. help.  Just type 4EDIT at the command line and then press F1 to enter
  90. the Help system.

  92. 4EDIT is a shareware program.  This evaluation version includes
  93. all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may
  94. use it for up to 30 days, without charge See ORDER.FRM for more
  95. details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use after
  96. this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program.  Any
  97. fee you may have paid to others (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain

  132. To install 4EDIT on your computer, simply copy the files to your hard
  133. disk.  4EDIT.EXE, 4EDIT.CFG and 4EDIT.HLP are the only files that are
  134. needed to run the program.  The other files contain descriptive material
  135. mainly of interest to BBS operators and distributors.

  147. Extended Edit Window.
  148. The edit window shows the entire description.  You can edit a larger
  149. description than maximum length.  This feature is useful when you have
  150. copied text from the file viewer.  When the description is too long, the
  151. displayed character count will change color.  Excess characters will not
  152. be written to the description file.

  154. However, the Editor is not always active, as it was in previous
  155. versions.  To enter the editor, you have several options:
  156.  
  157.     1. Position the Highlight bar on the desired line and press F4
  158.        or the right arrow key.
  159.     2. Move the mouse cursor to the description area of the desired
  160.        line and press the left mouse button twice  (double click).
  161.  
  162. Change directories from within 4EDIT
  163. Position highlight bar on a directory line and press F2 or position the
  164. mouse to he desired line and double click on the left half of the
  165. screen.
  166.  
  167. Configurable maximum description length.
  168. The allowable range is 20 to 200 characters.

  171. Files can be viewed from within 4EDIT by pressing F3 or by positioning
  172. the mouse to the desired line and double clicking or pressing the left
  173. arrow key.  Text from the file can be copied and pasted into any file
  174. description.
